I am one of seven children and was raised on a small farm in MS. My education includes a B. A. From Millsaps College plus a B. D. and MDiv. from Vanderbilt Divinity School. I am an ordained United Methodist minister with forty-two years of active ministry: fourteen as a church pastor, twenty-three as an Air Force chaplain, and five as a V. A. Chaplain. For my expressed opposition to segregation in the 1960s, I was forced to leave MS and later selected for Who’s Who in Methodism. I am a certified counselor for Alcoholism in TX. I retired from the Air Force as a Lt. Colonel and have written four books: Joseph’s Journey, A Pain in The Gut, Could it be? Biblical Gems from the Garbage Dump and Getting Right with God. My wife of sixty-five years and I have two children and now live in Texas, where we have lived for twenty-five years.

A book that will influence the way you think about yourself and others. For more than forty years as an Air Force chaplain pastor, counselor and therapist, he has applied the fundamentals of Judeo-Christian thought to help numerous clients recover and renew their lives. The presence or absence of a severe pain in our gut largely determines how we act, from infancy to old age. The absence of persistent pain allows us to take control and lead a happy, healthy, and wholesome life. Its presence robs life of its meaning and becomes our god, thereby controlling us. Unhealthy, disruptive, abusive or addictive behavior is a sure sign of that pain, and is also an attempt to relieve it. “Appropriate Love” is the key to recovery. “The Primary Purpose for families, religious groups, recovery programs, counselors, and friend are to love appropriately and enable others do the same” That is the only way to prevent or get rid of that awful Pain in the Gut.

The book is designed to stir the status quo and begins the stirring process by reexamining old passages from a new approval. Its author believes the only road leading to intellectual and spiritual growth runs through the crowded and musty city of “Old Ideas” and winds through the treacherous valley of “New Possibilities.” That is the basic outline for every chapter in this book. Each chapter identifies problematical interpretations of some ingrained religious ideas and offers new possibilities that enrich Christian living. Biblical requirements considered impossible to follow are interpreted as very doable. The uppermost question for each reader to keep in mind is, “Could it be this passage is very different than I originally thought?” Throughout the book, the author repeatedly affirms God is at work in common places, events and things. Biblical stories about personal deliverance and radical change were frequently facilitated by something quite ordinary. What we called a miracle was often an ordinary act for God. If that is how God works, he regularly offers “miracles” to everyone, not just to special people in special situations. These passages about miracles, admonitions and probing questions are prototypes of the human condition, making them extremely relevant because they are “OUR STORY” too.

How to “Get Right with God” has been a serious concern from ancient times to the present. Through scholarly research, logic, common sense and experience, the author seriously challenges both ancient and modern answers to that question. His answer take seriously the teachings of Jesus and he questions the Pauline approach. When asked that question, Jesus answered by saying one must love God above all else and then love your neighbor as yourself. Jesus reiterated the answer of the ancient Hebrews and the great prophets. The answer has nothing to do with who Jesus was or what he did in life or after death. Believe Jesus!

Favorite part of being a writer

My favorite part is searching for truth and then sharing it. It is refreshing when people give you compliments on your work but my reward is knowing that I have presented ideas that are frequently new, radically different and as truthful as I can present them. Knowing you have created something that can change the life of numerous people is also very rewarding. Even if there is some hostile response to the book, that may prove its effectiveness. My entire professional life was helping people. Why not continue in retirement
